Book Summary: One of the earliest texts on sexuality and sexual behavior, the Kama Sutra was written in Sanskrit by the Hindu philosopher Vatsyayana between 400 BCE and 200 CE, and explores concept of kama, or sexual pleasure. According to the Hindu religion, kama is one of the four main goals of life, along with dharma (righteousness), artha (worldy and material well-being), and moksha (liberation). Although the Kama Sutra provides practical advice on sex, it is not simply a sexual handbook, but is a philosophical guide to love and family intended to help its readers create a more balanced, harmonious and pleasure-filled life. Book Summary: The Kama Sutra The Standard Work on Human Sexual Behavior By Vatsyayana Translated from the Sanscrit In Seven Parts, with Preface, Introduction and Concluding Remarks. New Edition The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian Hindu text widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behavior in Sanskrit literature written by Vaatsyayana. A portion of the work consists of practical advice on sexual intercourse. It is largely in prose, with many inserted anustubh poetry verses. "Kama" which is one of the four goals of Hindu life, means desire including sexual desire the latter being the subject of the textbook, and "sutra" literally means a thread or line that holds things together, and more metaphorically refers to an aphorism (or line, rule, formula), or a collection of such aphorisms in the form of a manual. Contrary to popular perception, especially in the western world, Kama sutra is not exclusively a sex manual; it presents itself as a guide to a virtuous and gracious living that discusses the nature of love, family life and other aspects pertaining to pleasure oriented faculties of human life. The Kama Sutra is the oldest and most notable of a group of texts known generically as Kama Shastra (Sanskrit: Kama Sastra). Historians attribute Kamasutra to be composed between 400 BCE and 200 CE. John Keay says that the Kama Sutra is a compendium that was collected into its present form in the 2nd century CE.

Book Summary: The Kama Sutra is famous as an ancient Hindu sex manual. But its significance goes much deeper -- it is also a spiritual guide. In the Tantric sects, the union of the god Shiva and the goddess Shakti symbolizes the union of all opposites in the One, and also symbolizes the unity of the individual consciousness with the One. As the Upanishads put it, "In the embrace of his beloved, a man forgets the whole world, everything both within and without. In the same way, he who embraces the Self knows neither within nor without."

Book Summary: The 1964 publication of Sir Richard Burton's translation marked the first wide appearance in English of the Kama Sutra and was celebrated as a literary event of highest importance. As vital to an understanding of ancient Indian civilization as the works of Plato and Aristotle are to the West, the Kama Sutra has endured for 1,700 years as an indisputable classic of world literature. Written with frankness and unassuming candor, the Kama Sutra remains one of the most readable and enjoyable of all the classics of antiquity. A work of philosophy, psychology, sociology, Hindu dogma, scientific inquiry, and sexology, the Kama Sutra's importance is so great that it has at the same time both affected Indian civilization and remained an indispensable key to understanding it.
